Hello, World! An Indie Explorer’s Manifesto

My name is Alex Shaw.

For years, my world has been one of clear requirements, structured sprints, and well-defined technical architecture. As a full-stack developer, I found comfort in logic and order. But today, as the tidal wave of AI reshapes our industry, I find myself standing at a crossroads—one filled with both boundless opportunity and overwhelming uncertainty.

I’ve decided to step into that uncertainty.

I'm leaving the traditional path to become an indie explorer. My mission is to answer a question that keeps me up at night: In an era of endless possibility, how does a solo developer find and seize real, valuable opportunities?

This blog, Code & Compass, is the genesis block of my journey. It's my commitment to stop waiting for the perfect idea and to start building a system to find it.

From Anxiety to Systems

In the beginning, I fell into the classic trap of "analysis paralysis." I read every article, joined every community, and consumed every "how-to" guide. But the flood of information only led to more anxiety. I realized I needed to stop consuming and start processing.

So, I established a personal philosophy for this new chapter, grounded in a few core principles: systems over inspiration, data over gut feelings, and pragmatic action over the quest for perfection. I firmly believe that the best opportunities aren't found by chance; they are uncovered through a disciplined, repeatable process.

Building My "Opportunity Radar"

As an engineer, my first instinct is to build tools to solve problems. To turn my philosophy into a practical workflow, I created a set of automated scripts that I call my "Opportunity Radar." This system is my answer to the noise of the internet.

The Trend Engine (trending_analyzer.py): This tool helps me scan the "zeitgeist" of the developer world, analyzing what's currently popular on platforms like GitHub. It tells me where the market's attention and consensus lie.
The Signal Engine (new_stars_scanner.py): This second tool is more forward-looking. It uses the GitHub API to find "rising stars"—new projects that gain significant traction shortly after being created. This helps me catch the early signals of what might become the next big wave.

These tools are my oar and my sail in this vast digital ocean.
